Americans across the political spectrum are showing rare bipartisan agreement on the need for federal action to tackle the country's housing affordability crisis, according to a new survey by real estate brokerage Redfin. The findings suggest that rising home prices, rents and construction costs have transformed housing affordability into a national priority that transcends traditional political divisions.
The survey found that 79 percent of U.S. adults support tax incentives for first-time homebuyers, while 77 percent favour federal policies aimed at making housing more affordable. Three-quarters of respondents back limits on rent increases and initiatives to build more affordable housing for low-income families, while 74 percent support down payment assistance programmes designed to help more households enter the property market.
Support also extends to measures aimed at increasing housing supply. More than half of respondents said governments should make it easier to build new homes in their communities, reflecting growing public recognition that expanding housing supply is essential to improving affordability and easing pressure on home prices and rents.
Although Democrats generally expressed stronger support for the proposed measures, Republicans also recorded significant levels of approval. The survey showed that 85 percent of Democrats and 77 percent of Republicans support first-time homebuyer tax credits, while 83 percent of Democrats and 74 percent of Republicans favour broader federal affordability policies. Support for expanding affordable housing construction also crossed party lines, with 85 percent of Democrats and 68 percent of Republicans backing new housing initiatives for low-income families.
Notably, 57 percent of both Democrats and Republicans support policies that would make it easier to build homes in their own communities, highlighting shared backing for zoning reforms and streamlined planning regulations intended to boost residential development.
The survey comes as lawmakers continue debating federal proposals focused on expanding housing supply, modernising permitting systems and reducing regulatory barriers to construction. While approaches have differed between administrations, housing affordability has increasingly become a federal policy priority, with policymakers recognising the combined impact of restrictive zoning, years of underbuilding, elevated mortgage rates and rising construction costs.
Redfin Chief Economist Daryl Fairweather said housing affordability has evolved from a predominantly local issue into a national economic challenge, adding that reforms such as zoning changes and streamlined permitting can improve affordability without relying solely on increased government spending.
Economists broadly agree that persistent supply shortages and financial barriers have contributed to one of the least affordable housing markets in decades. The survey suggests that voters increasingly expect governments at every level to adopt policies that expand housing supply, improve affordability and widen access to homeownership.
