Islamabad : ReNews Pakistan
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched preparations to ensure the availability of at least 4,000 international standard hotel rooms in Islamabad for delegates expected to attend next year’s Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conference, potentially accelerating investment and development activity in the capital’s hospitality sector.
As part of the preparations, the civic authority is conducting a survey of hotels across Islamabad to determine both the number and quality of rooms currently available. The exercise will be used to prepare a detailed accommodation inventory for international delegates and identify gaps that need to be addressed before the conference.
According to officials, Islamabad currently has more than 4,000 hotel rooms. However, around 1,000 of these are considered below the international standards required for accommodating foreign delegations, creating a need for additional high quality capacity.
CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf has said the authority is confident that the required target will be achieved despite the existing capacity challenge.
The CDA plans to hold a conference with owners of leading hotels and potential investors next week. The meeting is expected to focus on encouraging existing operators to expand their room capacity, accelerating hotel projects already under construction and exploring opportunities for new hospitality developments in Islamabad.
Several hotel projects currently under development are expected to become operational next year. The CDA chairman said the completion of these projects would increase the capital’s accommodation capacity beyond the requirement anticipated for the SCO conference.
The initiative could provide fresh momentum to Islamabad’s hotel and commercial real estate market as preparations for major international events increase demand for quality accommodation, hospitality facilities and supporting infrastructure.
According to the CDA chairman, the prime minister and interior minister have directed the authority to place particular emphasis on development of the hotel industry ahead of the upcoming international gatherings.
The SCO conference will not be the only major event putting pressure on Islamabad’s hospitality infrastructure. The capital is also expected to host other significant events next year, including the South Asian Games and a meeting of the International Olympic Committee.
Hosting several major events within a relatively short period could generate sustained demand for hotel rooms and encourage investors to bring planned hospitality projects to the market more quickly.
Beyond conventional hotels, the CDA is also developing contingency arrangements to ensure sufficient accommodation is available if required. Government facilities, including Ghandhara Club and other government buildings, are expected to be kept available as backup accommodation for SCO delegates.
The hotel room survey and proposed engagement with investors indicate that the CDA’s preparations are extending beyond temporary accommodation arrangements and could contribute to a broader expansion of Islamabad’s hospitality infrastructure.
If new hotel developments and projects currently under construction are completed according to schedule, Islamabad could enter next year with substantially greater international standard accommodation capacity, strengthening the capital’s ability to host large diplomatic, sporting and international events.
