Islamabad | ReNews Pakistan
The federal government has allocated Rs 226.98 billion under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the financial year 2026 for 71 projects of the National Highway Authority (NHA), as part of its continued focus on strengthening road infrastructure and improving national connectivity.
According to details shared in the Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26, the major share of the allocation has been reserved for ongoing development schemes. Out of the total amount, Rs 224.83 billion has been earmarked for projects already under implementation, while Rs 2.15 billion has been allocated for new schemes.
The allocation indicates that the government is prioritizing the completion and advancement of existing highway and motorway projects instead of launching a large number of new initiatives in the upcoming fiscal year. Officials believe that sustained financing for ongoing schemes is essential to avoid delays, cost escalations and disruptions in connectivity-related development work.
The National Highway Authority currently manages a vast road network comprising 48 national highways, motorways and strategic roads, with a total length of around 14,480 kilometers. This network plays a critical role in intercity travel, freight movement, trade logistics, regional connectivity and access to remote areas.
The latest PSDP allocation is expected to support construction, rehabilitation, expansion and improvement work across various sections of the national road network.
Highway and motorway projects are considered central to economic growth as they facilitate cargo transportation, reduce travel time, improve access to markets and support commercial activity across provinces.
The heavy allocation for ongoing schemes also suggests that the federal government is seeking to maintain momentum on projects already under construction.
Infrastructure experts often point out that delays in road development projects not only increase financial costs but also affect commuters, transporters and businesses dependent on reliable road links.
With national highways and motorways serving as the backbone of Pakistan’s transport system, the government’s latest funding plan is likely to remain focused on improving road safety, reducing bottlenecks and enhancing connectivity between major cities, industrial zones, ports and border regions.
The comparatively small amount allocated for new projects shows a cautious approach toward fresh development spending, as the government attempts to balance infrastructure needs with fiscal constraints. However, the continued investment in existing NHA schemes reflects the importance of completing key road corridors that are already part of the national development agenda.
