The federal government has decided to reduce the budget for development schemes of National Assembly members and parliamentarians for the next financial year 2026-27.
According to sources, Rs 63 billion has been proposed for parliamentarians’ development schemes, down from the earlier proposed allocation of Rs 70 billion.
The decision comes after the federal government reduced the overall Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) from Rs 1,126 billion to Rs 1,000 billion. Following the cut in the development budget, allocations for various ministries, divisions and special development programmes are being reviewed.
Sources said the government’s priority in the next fiscal year would be to fund ongoing and near-completion development projects instead of launching a large number of new schemes. The aim is to prevent delays, avoid cost escalation and reduce financial pressure on the national exchequer.
Officials linked to the planning process say the reduction in development spending is mainly due to limited fiscal space, the heavy burden of ongoing projects and the need to contain the budget deficit. They added that the federal development programme is already facing pressure from a large portfolio of ongoing schemes, making it necessary to utilize available resources on a priority basis.
At the level of the National Economic Council, a significant cut in development spending for the next fiscal year has also been approved. In addition to the federal PSDP, provincial annual development programmes have also faced reductions, indicating that the government is following a policy of controlling expenditure and focusing available funds on priority projects.
According to sources, parliamentarians’ development schemes usually include small-scale projects at the constituency level, such as roads, streets, drainage, electricity, gas, drinking water and other basic public facilities. However, the budget cut may affect the number, pace and release of funds for such schemes.
Government circles maintain that careful use of development funds is necessary under the current economic conditions. However, opposition parties and some public circles may express concern that a reduction in constituency-based development funds could negatively affect local-level projects.
Economic experts believe that although a cut in the development budget may be important for fiscal discipline, it could also have an impact on construction activity, employment, local infrastructure and public welfare projects.
Experts say the real challenge for the government will be to prioritize projects that are more important in terms of public need, economic benefit and chances of timely completion, despite limited financial resources.
The final details of the federal budget for the next fiscal year will make it clear how the proposed Rs 63 billion allocation for parliamentarians’ development schemes will be released and under what rules and priorities.
