Islamabad | ReNews Pakistan
US investors are exploring opportunities in Pakistan’s mineral sector, with particular interest in copper deposits in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and rare earth mineral reserves in Gilgit Baltistan, as Washington seeks to strengthen critical mineral supply chains and expand investment in commercially viable mining projects.
A US Embassy official, speaking at a background briefing, said American companies were evaluating investment opportunities across Pakistan’s mining industry, ranging from relatively small mineral extraction operations to large scale copper projects.
The official said the United States was prepared to support financing for another major mining development comparable in scale to the Reko Diq copper and gold project, provided feasibility studies establish sufficient commercial potential.
According to the official, some American companies are considering acquiring and developing smaller mines, while others are assessing opportunities in larger copper deposits. Despite operational and investment challenges associated with Pakistan’s mining industry, US investors continue to view the sector as having considerable long-term potential.
Interest is particularly focused on copper resources in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and rare earth minerals in Gilgit-Baltistan, two regions that could become increasingly important as global demand for critical minerals rises.
Pakistan also possesses deposits of other strategically important minerals, including antimony and tungsten, with extraction activity already taking place in parts of the country.
In addition to direct investment in mining operations, US companies are exploring offtake agreements with smaller Pakistani mines. Such arrangements could allow minerals extracted in Pakistan to be purchased under longer term agreements for processing and eventual export to the United States.
The official said the United States has identified 60 minerals as critical to its economy and national security, particularly because of their importance to rapidly expanding industries including artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, advanced computing, energy technologies and defence applications. Several of these minerals are believed to be available in Pakistan.
Washington is increasingly seeking to diversify critical mineral supply chains as competition for the raw materials required for advanced technologies intensifies globally.
The Trump administration is supporting the development of alternative critical mineral supply chains through financing mechanisms provided by major US institutions, including the Export-Import Bank of the United States and the US International Development Finance Corporation.
These financing channels could potentially facilitate American participation in commercially viable Pakistani mining projects, particularly where substantial capital is required for exploration, extraction, processing and associated infrastructure.
The growing US interest comes as Pakistan seeks to attract greater foreign investment into its largely underdeveloped mineral resources and position mining as a more significant contributor to economic growth and exports.
According to the US official, minerals currently account for approximately 3 percent of Pakistan’s economic output, leaving considerable room for expansion if the country can attract investment, improve infrastructure and successfully develop commercially viable deposits.
The official said Pakistan’s mineral sector could make a significant contribution to the national economy over the next 10 to 20 years, particularly as international demand for copper, rare earth elements and other critical minerals continues to increase.
The emerging interest from American investors could therefore open a new avenue for Pakistan US economic cooperation, with mining and critical minerals potentially becoming an increasingly important component of bilateral investment ties.
