Islamabad | ReNews Pakistan
The federal government has decided to introduce modern surveillance cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) based monitoring systems on motorways to identify vehicles involved in traffic and axle load violations, as part of a broader effort to improve road safety, protect highway infrastructure and strengthen enforcement of transport regulations.
Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan chaired a meeting on the National Highway Authority’s (NHA) axle-load control framework and directed relevant authorities to remove all legal and operational hurdles within one week to ensure effective implementation of the system.
During the meeting, the minister stressed the need for clear and practical guidelines for transporters regarding permissible vehicle structures and weight limits. Authorities were instructed to ensure that freight operators are fully aware of the applicable axle-load regulations so that violations can be reduced and enforcement can be carried out more effectively.
The minister also ordered authorities to identify factories and other facilities involved in loading excessive weight onto trucks. Such entities will face fines under the applicable regulations, with the aim of addressing overloading at its source rather than relying solely on enforcement at road checkpoints.
AI Based Monitoring and Automated Weigh Stations to Strengthen Enforcement
Abdul Aleem Khan directed that it should be mandatory for freight vehicles to pass through designated weigh stations before proceeding on major highways. He further ordered the complete automation of the weigh-station system to minimize human intervention, improve transparency and ensure accurate recording of vehicle weights.
The government also plans to establish modern weigh stations along GT Roads, following the model already being implemented on motorways. According to officials, a modern model weigh station in Sangjani is nearing completion and has been designed in accordance with international standards.
To further strengthen enforcement, the minister directed officials to deploy advanced cameras on motorways and integrate artificial intelligence into traffic monitoring. The technology will be used to identify vehicles violating traffic laws and axle-load limits, potentially allowing authorities to detect violations more efficiently and take timely action.
Officials informed the meeting that approximately 30,000 axle-load violations had been recorded across the country during the last six months, highlighting the scale of the overloading problem and its impact on road safety and infrastructure.
The minister also decided to personally visit 10 locations on different motorways to assess the implementation of the axle-load control regime and review the effectiveness of enforcement measures.
The latest measures are aimed at creating a more automated and technology-driven system for monitoring freight traffic, reducing overloading, improving compliance with weight restrictions and protecting the country’s road network from premature deterioration.
